Convenia for cats side effects. First off as is the case with any medication a cat may have an adverse reaction to the antibiotic. Long-acting antibiotic for cats that can have serious side effects I agree with Ianthi that the cat needs to be seen by a different vet but maybe there is another one within this same practice as I do think they should be. I know others on here have posted about convenia turning their kitties into zombies for a little while but I think it was only for a week or so.
The following adverse events were reported voluntarily during post-approval use of the product in dogs and cats in foreign markets. To repeat what I said above all drugs have side effects but it is my opinion that Convenia is being administered far too often when there are safer choices available for nearly all cases. Convenia adverse reactions in catsfelines and dogscanines.
I know the vets generally like to reserve use of it for more serious cases of infection and use oral ABs instead where feasible. Allergic reactions to CONVENIA are possible. In cats other side effects of Convenia that are rarely seen include vomiting diarrhoea anorexia lethargy hyperactivity inappropriate urination and mild elevations of liver and kidney enzymes the liver metabolises Convenia while the kidneys excrete its by-products in the urine.
Adverse effects can occur up to two months after an injection. Its about Convenia an antibiotic shot by Pfizer thats supposed to work for 10-14 days. Despite the convenience of injectable antibiotics for pets there are some downsides to consider.
One was off feeding a little vomiting and lethargic for the first few days afterwards however they were also symptoms of her triggering illness so it is doubtful if these can be seen as side-effects of Convenia. Cefovecin is given by injection and is used on and off label to treat bacterial infections in dogs and cats. These side effects are uncommon similar to the incidence rates of other antibiotics.
Pretty much any type of antibiotic can cause an adverse reaction and this is even truer for animals that were never treated with it before. It is also used in cats to treat urinary tract infections caused by certain specific bacteria. Or if your pet is taking any other medications or supplements the injection might adversely interact with them.
